How did it take heavy metal music SO LONG to catch on to the idea that “percussionists add intensity”? Polynesian Warriors have understood the infusion of their intense yell-screaming with polyrhythmic drum beats for thousands of years. Sepultura brought the 1990s up to speed with “What the rest of the world felt that (primarily US & UK-popular) metal had been missing out on,” percussively (when I first heard “Ratamahatta” from “The Roots of” in around 1996, my jaw broke off of my idiot, teenaged face). Living Sacrifice showed the world a new level of ferocity with “Reborn,” but the new millennium was the moment that sealed the deal for the band. To date, “The Hammering Process” is a “Top 5 heaviest albums of all time,” for me. This record has EVERYTHING YOU COULD EVER WANT FROM A HEAVY METAL album. It creeps along, it eviscerates, it terrifies, it makes you want to figure out how to count it out, it makes you want to dance, it is despairingly bleak, it is hopeful. Revisit it. Get this record, it is a far superior pressing to the OG (I know this firsthand). Show your friends how an album can “feel as fresh & interesting today, as the day it came out.”
